Ajwa, Medjool or Safawi? A Guide to the Dates We Sell

Not all dates taste the same, and if you've only ever had the dry, sugar-crusted dates sold in most supermarkets, you're missing what the fuss is about. Here's how our three signature varieties compare.

Medjool — the everyday luxury. Grown in the Jordan Valley, Medjool dates are large, soft and almost caramel-like, with a deep amber-brown flesh. They're the most versatile of the three: good eaten straight, stuffed with nuts, or chopped into baking. If you're new to premium dates, start here.

Ajwa — the deep, complex one. Smaller and darker than Medjool, Ajwa dates are grown specifically around Madinah and have a distinctive, almost smoky sweetness with a soft, slightly wrinkled texture. They carry particular significance in Islamic tradition and are the variety most requested for Ramadan gifting.

Safawi — the dense, rich middle ground. Also from Madinah, Safawi dates are near-black, denser than Medjool, and have a deep, molasses-like flavour without being quite as complex as Ajwa. A good choice if you want something richer than Medjool but more approachable than Ajwa.

Our take: if you're buying for yourself, get a Medjool box first — it's the easiest to love. If you're gifting for Eid or Ramadan, Ajwa or a mixed hamper makes the stronger impression.
